May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month!

The official one, anyway. In Florida every month should be skin cancer awareness month. The Center for Skin Wellness provides the information, screenings and treatment to help keep your family safe while you enjoy your Florida lifestyle. Here are a couple quick tips: Apply water-resistant sunscreen on a daily basis, 30SPF+, and re-apply often during outdoor activities; when spending time in the sun be sure to wear a hat and UV-rated sunglasses, sun-protective clothing for additional safety; avoid tanning beds; and see your dermatologist for regular screenings or if you notice any suspicious or changing moles. Important information about Rosacea

People often mistake what looks like a rash/excessive redness in the skin or a severe breakout for what actually is a chronic skin disorder called Rosacea. Although harmless, Rosacea is identified by redness and swelling with skin sores that resemble acne. The cause of this disorder is unknown, but most commonly occurring on fair-skinned women, age 30-50. There is no cure for Rosacea, but to help ease or prevent what may be symptoms of this disorder, avoid spicy foods, alcohol and hot beverages, excess activity in hot weather, and make sure to wear sunscreen on a daily basis. Your dermatologist can diagnose this disorder through skin examination and investigation of your medical history. Treatment for actinic keratoses

Taking care of your skin is important throughout your entire life. Sun-exposed skin, especially on the face, neck, hands and forearms can be the most sensitive, and also the most prone to develop actinic keratoses, a precancerous skin condition, most readily affecting ages 30-40. actinic keratoses are small, but noticeable red, brown or skin colored patches that don’t go away. Early detection through a skin examination from your doctor is important, and treatment to stop the progression of the condition is possible. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is the ideal treatment. PDT is a safe and effective treatment using Levulan® and Intense Blu-U® Light treatment to help improve the texture of the skin and prevent actinic keratoses from developing into skin cancer. PDT can also be used to improve the appearance of wrinkles, pore size, skin texture, and for overall skin rejuvenation.
